Fera Zero x LA Compost
Fera Zero x LA Compost
Fera Zero partnered with LA Compost to measure, track and reward food waste diverted through community compost and urban garden programs. To date, data collection and impact reporting has been underutilized as a tool to quantify and share the benefits of composting amongst the community, as well as vis-a-vis decision-makers and the city at large.
Mission:
Fera Zero customized our app for LA Compost to measure food waste diversion and deliver personalized impact stats to participants, to empower community compost efforts with data and increase participation.
Results:
Nearly a 50% increase in participation during the first 6 months of using Fera Zero:
Unique organics drop offs rose from 52 to 98 people per hour per location
Food waste diverted rose from 9,000 to 18,000 lbs per month (1 location)
Virtuous Cycle:
Data collection + Data Storytelling creates a virtuous cycle of engagement.
We proved that calculating and celebrating the impact of a decision to create compost, not garbage, is a game-changer.
Despite the pandemic, 2000 people (and counting) use Fera Zero to drop off their food scraps on Sundays at our LA Compost pilot location.

Community Response.
Community members bringing food scraps to our pilot location embraced the new method and opted-in to our Impact Reports detailing the environmental impact of food “waste” diversion with resoundingly positive response.
The gorgeous food scraps below will soon transform into soil, to grow new food, and perpetuate life…instead of creating methane in a landfill.
